The present collection of papers, published over the years by Professor Pirhiya Beck, is the scientific heritage of a leading scholar in the art and iconography of ancient Palestine. The 28 articles, 5 of which were formerly published in Hebrew, deal with artistic and iconographic issues. They give the reader an insight into the methodology and scientific approach that dictated Prof. Beck's research for nearly 30 years.

The book is organized in two parts. The first comprises 6 articles that discuss major iconographic problems and are arranged in chronological order ranging from the Chalcolithic period to the Iron Age II. In the second part are 22 articles, again arranged in chronological order, dealing with various iconographic topics that range from the Neolithic period through the end of the Iron Age. Beck's contributions to the study of the archaeology of Palestine are not included in the present book. The reader can find references to these works in the list of her publications.
