With the help of an autobiographical introduction and a selection of specific essays an attempt is made to demonstrate the value of working with the (original) manuscripts in detail for a more profound understanding of many facets of Early Christianity, above all the texts and background of the New Testament. At the same time there is the intention to persuade other scholars to have at least once a closer look at an original manuscript, no matter if it is a textual witness to the New Testament, to some apocryphal text, to early Christian life, or even any specific socio-historical feature of the life of the common people in those days of early Christianity. That is why specific essays are selected and put into the succession given. This is meant to help to achieve the goal previously stated in manifold ways, presenting editions of papyri and first-hand information, depicting how to base even complex constructs of ideas on a scrutinizing treatment of manuscripts, and demonstrating the value of studying manuscripts for lexicography, painting a picture of a socio-historical background, or how to assess and evaluate data methodologically.
