This is the first full treatment of the Greek and Latin references to Zoroastrianism since the pioneering works of Benveniste, Bidez & Cumont, and Clemen. It focuses on the possibilities offered by the classical reports on Zoroastrianism to reconstruct the history of that faith. The book is divided into three sections. The first section deals with introductory problems concerning ancient religious ethnography and current views of the history of Zoroastrianism. The second section consists of commentaries on five selected passages. The third section offers a thematical overview of the materials and their relevance for the history of Iranian religions.Apart from offering introductions to a wide range of debates and topics in Classics and Iranian studies, the book aims to illustrate the diversity of beliefs and practices in ancient Zoroastrianism.CONTENTSAbbreviations Acknowledgments Introduction 1 Preliminary questions 1 The classical texts on Iranian religions in Western scholarship 2 A double unknown: problems and prospects 3 Alterity and classical Orientalism: Persians in Graeco-Roman literature 4 The interpretatio graeca of Iranian divinities 5 Pseudo-zoroastrian literature and the Mages hellenises 2 Views of Zoroastrian history 1 Introduction: the problem 2 Fragmentising views 3 Harmonising views 4 Diversifying views 5 The three approaches compared: the status of Zurvanism 6 Oral religious traditions and the specialisation of knowledge 3 A commentary on five selected longer passages 1 Herodotus, Histories 1.131-132 2 Strabo, Geography 15.3.13-15 3 Plutarch, De Iside et Osiride 46-47 (369D-370C) 4 Diogenes Laertius 1.6-9 5 Agathias, Histories 2.23-25 4 Thematic inventory of the Greek and Latin texts 2 The Pandemonium 3 Zoroaster 5 Temple and cult 6 Ritual 7 Priests 8 Social and ethical codes 5 Final observations Select bibliography Index of words Index of sources Index of modern authors
