The ancient Egyptians imagined the circulation of the sun as a journey of the sun god who crosses the heavens in his barque, accompanied by a crew of gods. The Books of the Afterlife describe the events of this journey and the creatures the travellers encounter as well as the mythological or scientific ideas the Egyptians associated with these travels. While several compositions describe the nocturnal journey, only one single source reports on the daytime journey: The Book of the Day (Livre du Jour).During the 1940s Alexandre Piankoff presented the first and so far valid edition of the Book of the Day, for which the two versions in the tomb of Ramesses VI provide the basis. Further sources were either published incompletely or remained unrecognized so far, like several sarcophagi. Additionally, there are sources, which are considered as a Book of the Day, but whose classification remains an issue. This new edition assesses all mentioned sources critically, and thus provides a revised compilation of texts.Based on these data, this study presents a synoptic text edition of the Book of the Day providing the foundation for the first German translation and a philological comment. It also provides analyses referring to questions, which partly remained unnoticed so far. Besides the re-evaluation of cryptographically encoded texts, this study describes the cosmography and the hidden mytho-geography, and discusses the astronomical conceptions.
