This volume contains the papers presented at an interdisciplinary and international symposium entitled "The Influence of Greece on the Religion and Culture of Ancient Israel" held on April 29, 2003 at the Evangelical Theology Faculty of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt am Main. The contributions discuss the question of traces of Greek influence in Palestine prior to the campaign of Alexander and of the perceptible changes which that campaign introduced, from the perspectives of archaeology, geography, ancient history, literary history, and the history of religions. Uniting these diverse perspectives is the tendency to place greater emphasis on the role of the Pheonicians as mediators of Greek culture than on the direct influence of Greece on pre-Hellenistic Israel.
