This volume concludes the publication of the first section. It contains addenda and corrigenda to the volumes already published, and the following indexes: 1. Variants of names, 2. Sources, 3. Titles and occupations, 4. Geographical index. The indexes allow the work to be accessed from a variety of starting points. The prosopography thus provides information not only about the persons documented but also about Byzantine society and the history of Byzantium together with that of its Eastern and Western neighbours. The prosopography now encompasses seven volumes, which have been published within four years. Seldom has such a comprehensive work, containing some 11,500 people from the time of the approximate beginning of the Middle Byzantine period (641) up to the accession to power of the Macedonian dynasty (867), been published in such a short time. The second section of the prosopography will probably be published in seven volumes and will cover the period of the Macedonian dynasty (867-1025).
