Charismatic Killers examines the shared rhetoric between the Hebrew Bible and film. It is argued that an exposition of the social and cultural context of films (i.e. production and reception), as well as structural and narrative analysis, at the least raises useful questions about the rationale of the Hebrew Bible's violent rhetoric. One of the key premises is that there is little cultural evidence to facilitate understanding of the Hebrew Bible's frequent use of violence and ambiguity, and biblical scholarship generally does not reflect on the significance of this pervasive rhetoric of entertainment. In particular, Charismatic Killers examines the rhetorical aspects of genre films (especially as these exhibit violence and ambiguity) as they relate to cultural factors, and from there hypothesizes as to the cultural forces that shaped the Hebrew Bible's rhetoric. The study also suggests other ways in which biblical narratives (with the example of the book of Judges) relate to film (with the examples of the Western and film noir genres), such as shared mythologies (e.g. of promised land, and western conquest). The study will be immeasurably aided by the many intriguing proposals regarding the relationship of filmic rhetoric to social context (ranging from postwar anxiety to shifts in gender constructs), and these are advantaged by exceptional access to primary research materials and fieldwork.ContentsIntroductionCase Study I: A Fistful of Shekels: Scrutinizing Ehud's EntertainingViolence (Judges 3:12-30)Case Study II: The Big Sleep: Strategic Ambiguity in Judges 4-5 and inClassic Film NoirCase Study III: Judges with Dirty Faces: Samson and the Rhetoric ofBrutalityConclusion
