This premier work considers the development of the doctrine of baptism in the Reformed tradition. Riggs studies the major early Reformers, concentrating on Calvin's views, and then traces the development of the doctrine through the Reformed Confessions, Reformed Orthodoxy, and into Schleiermacher's thought. Twentieth-century debates are discussed as they illuminate earlier tensions and differing views from the past.In light of this historical study, Riggs offers an analysis and critique of the baptismal rite found in The Book of Common Worship of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Here he considers the structure of the rite, its liturgical material, and offers an historical perspective on the rite in relation to earlier Reformed understandings. Riggs provides practical suggestions to pastors about ways in which the baptismal rite might more clearly reflect Calvin's views.
