From the time of the first consultation of the Seminar for Scripture and Hermeneutics some nine years ago, it has been an undergirding concern of our international community of scholars that formal academic study of the Bible should not be divided from the deeper vitality of the text itself as it functions both in the life of the church and also in the wider culture. This final volume in the series, planned for from the outset, reflects a desire of SAHS to gather a wide range of thinking into a multi-disciplinary consideration of the potential role of the Bible and contemporary biblical scholarship within the intellectual life of the university disciplines. Our consultation itself was remarkably fruitful in suggesting fresh strategies and avenues of approach, beginning with philosophy and theology, then moving out through representative humane sciences to conclude in some basic reflections on the educational task and the interplay of intellectual freedom and religious liberty within university culture. In each contribution a tacit question has been, "What can a vigorous and faithful biblical scholarship bring to the intellectual culture of the university itself?"This volume will contain twelve essays by internationally recognized scholars from both biblical studies and theology, as is our pattern, but also from the perspectives of other university disciplines: sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, literature, and education. Contributors include Dallas Willard, William Abraham, Al Wolters, Scott Hahn, Glenn Olsen, Byron Johnson, Robert C. Roberts, Robert Cochrane Jr., David I. Smith, John Sullivan, Roger Lundin, David Lyle Jeffrey, and C. Stephen Evans. Jeffrey is principal editor of the volume, with assistance from Evans.
